And he does so oblivious to the fact that evil forces have focused their attention on the Imperium of Man. The Emperor’s Children’s Primarch, Fulgrim, however, leads his soldiers into combat. It's not a good introduction to Warhammer 40K. This 40k novel is the fourth installment in the Horus Heresy Series, in which the Warmaster Horus continues his Good Crusade.
That might not sound like a major issue, but so much of the drama in the series comes from knowing how things end up. I still recommend this, there's some great fiction in there (Dan Abnett's stuff alone is an easy recommendation), but there's an additional major caveat: the Horus Heresy is really more like Warhammer 30K. As the series progresses you get things being more episodic, and that works a lot better with all of the different writing styles and tones. The Horus Heresy is presented as a major chapter of conflict in the Warhammer 40,000 lore: it is caused by a Chaos plot to foil the Imperium's leader and founder, the mysterious Emperor of Man, by fomenting rebellion and internecine warfare in the expanding Imperium of Man. Horus Rising has clear literary aspirations, and then the surviving characters get thrown into False Gods which is more the usual sci-fi horror action pulp thing, and it's jarring. The big problem is that (at least early on) you're following the same characters and plot through the books, so the drop is far more of an issue than it would be normally. Pretty good but not necessary The Outcast Dead, by Graham McNeill (2011) A good one, but people argue about a plot point. Age of Darkness, by Christian Dunn (2011) Another anthology. Dan Abnett (Goodreads Author) 4.43 avg rating 7,745 ratings. Liber herecticus is open, liber astartes is still sealed warhammer horus heresy books bundle. Prospero Burns, by Dan Abnett (2010) One of the best. Novels from the universe of Warhammer 40K and Horus Heresy. Horus Rising is top tier writing, Tales of Heresy is excellent, and I quite liked Mechanicum and a Thousand Sons. The First Heretic, by Aaron Dembski-Bowden (2010) The first by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, who I love.
